With no trouble, you can change sound modes, adjust volume, and activate and deactivate features like Quick Attention (which lowers the loudness of what you’re listening to so You can easily carry on a conversation without removing your headphones).
The XM4 has a ton of new technology within. The earphones are powered by a new Integrated Processor V1 and have an upgraded DAC and analog amplifier. In comparison to their previous model, Sony claims this one has an even crisper sound and superior noise cancellation. The DSEE Extreme audio processor with Edge-AI from Sony, which we have already used in the WH-1000XM4 and XM5 over-ear headphones, is also included in the new model. This processor is intended to upscale low-bitrate music files to nearly hi-res quality.
Similar in size to the 6mm driver found within the XM3, the XM4’s driver is built of a new material and has a larger magnet, which Sony claims enhances sound clarity and noise-cancellation, particularly with specific low frequencies.
Sound Quality
Before talking about the WF-1000XM4 headphones’ exceptional musicianship and expressive dynamics, we should talk about how they handle bass.
Low frequencies provide amazing clarity and bass quality. The amount of detail displayed is so amazing that it makes competing headphones, like the Bose Quiet Comfort Earbuds, seem crowded in contrast.
One of our favorite bass-heavy test tracks, Massive Attack’s “Angel,” is played via the earphones, and we’re taken away by how confidently they handle the music. Every element of that pounding bassline is expertly placed and dripping with texture. The WF-1000XM4 especially impresses with its note clarity, which enables it to convey subtleties in the bass notes that other headphones find difficult to discern.
However, it’s not a sound that favors low frequencies only. The Sony’s are able to change tempo with ease since there is consistency throughout and a sense of rhythmic precision.
